I was recently asked for my opinion on the role of transformation in enterprise service buses. The person requesting my opinon had come from an EAI background and was under the assumption that the ESBs with transformational capabilities were a better tool for integration. I explained to this person that with Services-Oriented Integration, many of the hurdles to integration that required the services of a big EAI hub were now being removed by the services, such as removal of proprietary formats, incompatible data types and interminable data structures. While there are still cases, mostly B2B, where one document type may need to be transformed into another completely different structure and gaps filled in, these types of requirements can now be satisfied by Business Process Management tools. In this type of environment, the ESB is responsible for ensuring enterprise qualities-of-service on behalf of the services. Therefore, transformation plays a much diminished role as part of an ESB.
I tend to agree. I have not identified cases for message transformation at ESB level in a pretty big SOA project.
The most "advanced" features of the tool we use are orchestration of services (with loops, conditions...) and credential extraction from message payload (to HTTP authenticate on some web services).
Of course, this is an internal bus, things might be different if we would have to play with external providers/consumers.
I also agree. I would tend to think of the ESB to handle service invocation and data transfer for critical app functions to integrate, vs transformation. The integration architect tool should serve for testing qualities-of-service. In addition, an ESB should provide a catalog for all services so that you do not have to know what language, platform, or location it is, just that you need it now.

Anyway, I was speaking to a techi guy at work who gets to know all the latest stuff and he uses the free Link Referral Program.
His website on dsl engine optimization search amongst other stuff has seen traffic explode since he started using the Link Referral Program - consequently his affiliate sales commissions and business sales went through the roof PLUS his website increased in google ranking which was an added bonus!!
If anyone else has any good ideas for driving more traffic to blogs/websites then please share with your online business blog buddies. Ta ;-)
