SOA, BPM... SOS!
What's really hidden behind these two guys? How can you leverage the second (Business Process Modeling) to build the first (Service Oriented Architecture)? How can this be done now, in a pragmatic way?
I suggest you attend Michael Rosen's class this morning to get replies to these questions. For those who can't, I will post some tips in this topic later on...

Here are the key concepts Michael exposed this morning:
* Services are process-centric interfaces to business functionalities that should be organized in a 3-levels hierarchy:
- domain services (technical ones),
- business services (combining n domain services),
- enterprise business process (orchestrating business services),
each level being built on top of another one; the topmost layer having the highest granularity, scope and visibility.
* In SOA, two lifecycles exist: the service provider one and the service consumer one, both with different needs and constraints. They must be loosely coupled to ensure that services will remain usable (hence will be re-used).
* Focusing only on technological aspects of SOA is not enough: to be successful, Business Process Management aspects are critical to consider.
* The main components of a successful SOA platform are the following:
- Technical and infrastructural services,
- Application integration framework,
- Data integration framework,
- Management framework,
- Development framework.
Michael then shown how much of these components are covered by the main competing technologies: .NET, J2EE and ESBs.
* With the proper organization in place, allowing central ownership of the services supported by strong business drivers, nothing should bring your SOA efforts down.
As Michael finally suggested: start small on selected projects, then expand... small steps, isn't that the way we climb mountains?
